Short description
To win the right to marry his love, the beautiful princess Andromeda, and fulfil his destiny, half-God-half-mortal Perseus must complete various tasks including taming Pegasus, capturing Medusa's head and battling the feared Kraken.
What's left behind the scenes
- The special effects in the film were created by master Ray Harryhausen.
- According to the original script, Perseus was supposed to behead Medusa by throwing his shield for censorship reasons. Harry Hamlin objected to this from the very beginning, emphasizing that the idea contradicted ancient Greek mythology. When the day of filming the scene arrived, and the script had not been changed, Hamlin began to threaten to leave the cast and return home. The actor refused to leave his trailer, to the indescribable irritation of producers Charles H. Schnee (1920-2009) and Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013, who was also responsible for the special effects) and director Desmond Davis. They began to persuade him, but other members of the film crew sided with the actor, so the scene was eventually rewritten.
- Calibos, son of Thetis, does not exist in ancient Greek mythology. The basis of this image is the image of Caliban from William Shakespeare’s (1564-1616) 1611 play, “The Tempest.” According to mythology, Achilles, who fought under the walls of Troy, was the son of Thetis.
- The dogs of Hades in ancient Greek mythology had three heads. This film only has two heads, because Ray Harryhausen couldn't manage three simultaneously.
