What's left behind the scenes

  • Robert Zemeckis was originally intended to direct the film, but after about a year of working on the project, he was replaced by Ron Howard. The director later explained his departure by saying that he showed the studio executives a work-in-progress version of his other project, 'Romancing the Stone' (1984), which made a very negative impression on them and, in the opinion of many, was doomed to fail.
  • Ron Howard's brother, father, and mother appear in cameo roles in the film.
  • At the time of filming, Wilford Brimley was only 50 years old. To make him appear much older than his age, his hair was dyed gray.
  • Humphrey Cronin and Jessica Tandy, who played the elderly couple Joseph and Alma Finley in the film, were actually married for many years.
  • After the film's release, the special effects team admitted in an interview that the dolphins shown in the underwater scenes were not real, but specially constructed robots.
