In the late 1970s, Jean-Luc Godard became obsessed with the story of Bugsy Siegel and decided to make a film about him. He wrote a screenplay titled 'The Story,' planning to star Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton. However, he abandoned this plan when Keaton lost interest in the film. An excerpt from the screenplay project was published in 1985 in the book 'Godard on Godard.'
A significant portion of the casino construction scenes were filmed near Palm Desert and La Quinta, California, where a full-scale mock-up of the 'Flamingo' was built.
Costume designer Albert Wolsky dressed over 2,000 people in period costumes for the film, sourcing many of them specifically from across the country.
Warren Beatty's costumes, as Bugsy, were exact replicas of those worn by gangster Bugsy Siegel (1906-1947). All of his character's accessories—from the lighter to the cufflinks—featured monograms.
Harvey Keitel's appearance was noticeably changed by his baldness and prosthetic nose.
