The film was shot and released two years after the publication in 1997 of the novel of the same name by Andrew Klavan, which served as its basis.
In the novel of the same name, which served as the literary basis for the film, the prisoner on death row is depicted as white. Clint Eastwood specifically changed his race in the film, believing it would be more appropriate. The novel's author, Andrew Klavan, made the character white, believing it would be more believable when someone would advocate for him.
When Warner Brothers first became interested in the novel and began considering a film adaptation, George Clooney was initially favored for the lead role. However, problems with the script and the resulting delays in filming led Clooney to pursue other projects.
