"Hunger" is the directorial and screenwriting debut of the renowned British artist Steve McQueen.
The film is based on real events from 1981, when a hunger strike by IRA activist prisoners was taking place within the walls of Belfast's Maze prison, led by 27-year-old Bobby Sands.
In 1981, Steve McQueen was 12 years old. At home in London, he watched television reports about the events at the "Maze" with his whole family, and, according to the director, the story of Bobby Sands captured his imagination. It was this childhood memory that prompted McQueen to work on the film.
