The story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder, and the people who aided in his fight to prove his innocence.

The film is based on the book by Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton, "Lazarus and the Hurricane: The Freeing of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter" (1991), and the book by Rubin Carter, "The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender To #45472" (1974).
To prepare for the role, Denzel Washington trained in boxing for over a year with a specially hired coach. During this time, he lost over 27 kg (approximately 60 lbs).
World champion Joey Giardello, who was given the victory over Carter by the judges in the film, won the fight decisively in real life. He filed a lawsuit against the film company and received a settlement out of court.
Detective Vincent Desimone (upon whom the character of Dell Pesca was based) never encountered Carter before the 1966 murder and died long before the boxer's release. In his youth, Carter was convicted of a series of robberies, and there is no evidence that the case was fabricated by the police.
