What's left behind the scenes

  • Michael Caine, who played Jack Carter in the original 1971 film, plays a character named Cliff Bramby in the new version.
  • One of the reasons Sir Michael Caine agreed to star in this remake of one of his best films was the opportunity to work alongside Sylvester Stallone, with whom he had a friendly relationship. They became friends while filming John Huston’s (1906-1987) drama “Victory” (1981).
  • Franchise Pictures wasn’t particularly keen on casting Mickey Rourke (it was all down to his dubious reputation). Sylvester Stallone, a friend of Rourke’s who suggested him for the role, agreed to pay a certain amount out of his own fee if Rourke was late for filming or caused any problems. Rourke showed up on set on time and demonstrated himself in the best possible light. This made such an impression on the film company that shortly after filming wrapped, Rourke was cast in Franchise Pictures’ next film – Sean Penn’s thriller “The Pledge” (2000).
  • Director Stephen T. Kay wanted the flashback scene of Richie’s murder to look as if it were being shown on grainy, damaged film. He turned to specialists at a film production company, asking them to come up with something unusual to achieve this effect. They came up with the following: they tied the film to a car bumper and drove around the parking lot near the company’s office a couple of times. This created the effect of scratched film. Unfortunately, someone from management noticed how they were treating the film and ordered them to stop immediately, fearing it would negatively impact the company’s image.
  • In the original version, Michael Caine’s character only appeared in one scene, but he was popular with viewers in focus groups, so the role of this character was significantly expanded and he was made the antagonist.
  • Filming took place from October 18, 1999, to January 14, 2000.
