Short description
Alex, Marty, and other zoo animals find a way to escape from Madagascar when the penguins reassemble a wrecked airplane. The precariously repaired craft stays airborne just long enough to make it to the African continent. There the New Yorkers encounter members of their own species for the first time. Africa proves to be a wild place, but Alex and company wonder if it is better than their Central Park home.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The cartoon is dedicated to the memory of comedian Bernie Mac, who voiced Zuba and did not live to see the premiere by three months.
  • Before starting work on the cartoon, the animation team took a trip to Africa.
  • Alex's birthmark on his paw is shaped like the African continent.
  • In the original, Alex's mother is named Florie. In the Russian dub, she is simply called Woman.
  • In the Finnish version of the cartoon, the hippopotamus Moto-Moto is voiced by the frontman of the band HIM – Ville Valo.
  • When the grandmother gathered all the tourists and lit a bonfire, holding a torch in her hands, she cast a shadow on the Statue of Liberty.
  • Makunga's mane is reminiscent of Sweeney Todd's hairstyle.
  • In the episode where the penguins are fixing jeeps, a jeep can be seen in the distance that strongly resembles the Russian UAZ-3159 "Bars" – a long-wheelbase version of the "UAZ-Hunter".
  • The zebras' resemblance is an allusion to a well-known racist saying (Chris Rock, who voiced Marty, is African American).
  • Alex's birthmark on his paw appears only after Alex greets the animals of Africa. Before that moment, and also in the first film, there was no mark on his paw.
  • In the episode where penguins are fixing jeeps, a jeep can be seen in the distance that strongly resembles a Russian UAZ-3159 "Bars" – a long-wheelbase version of the "UAZ-Hunter".
