What's left behind the scenes

  • Jon Bon Jovi auditioned for the lead role.
  • Initially, the main character was to be named Michael Corvin, however the name was changed to Ash.
  • The main villain, Judah, recites a poem about a raven in one scene. This poem was taken from the original comic by James O’Barr.
  • This was the last film of actress Tui Trang.
  • Tori Amos could have played Sarah, but she declined.
  • Initially, there was no fight scene between Vincent Perez and Tui Trang in the script, but Tui convinced director Tim Pope to add the scene and performed most of her own stunts.
  • Alex McDowell drew inspiration for the design of Los Angeles from the architecture of the 1920s and 1940s.
  • A stunt double was used for some scenes involving Vincent Perez, however, Vincent insisted on performing all the stunts himself in the final scene. The scenes of falling from the fifth floor, whipping, and hanging were performed by Vincent himself.
  • The following scenes were cut from the film: When Ash runs from Sarah's apartment, he doesn't believe he's dead. After that, Sarah stabs him with a kitchen knife. When Ash deals with the "Monkey," he exits the building, then says, "Don't try this at home, kids," and then shoots himself. In the original version, Ash didn't burn Danny's drawings. In the film, Ash deals with Kali, then with Kerver. In the original, it was the other way around. When Kali was thrown out the window, Ash appears out of nowhere. Kali asks him to kill her quickly because she is suffering from pain. Ash turns around and walks away.
  • When Kerver runs out of the bar, he knocks over a basket, but a few seconds later the basket is back in an upright position.
