Filming began on November 14, 1988, after three weeks of rehearsals in New York. Including a rather lengthy rehearsal period in the shooting schedule was standard practice for director Sidney Lumet (1924-2011), even from his earliest days in television.
Vince Patrick, who wrote the screenplay based on his own novel (1985), came up with the general plot idea when, having recently become a grandfather, he noticed his own traits and mannerisms in his grandson.
