What's left behind the scenes

  • The sailing vessels pulled along the Nile by Sudanese people were built specifically for the filming of this film. Considering they accurately replicated the sailing vessels of that historical period, their construction cost a considerable sum.
  • Director Zoltan Korda (1895-1961) hired a retired brigadier general, Hector Campbell, as a technical advisor on military matters, and at Korda's direction, he drilled the actors in the leading roles and extras as soldiers would have been drilled in the corresponding historical period.
  • Director Zoltán Korda paid close attention to historical accuracy, but occasionally allowed himself deviations from it in the name of spectacle. Before the start of filming the ball scene, Korda caused a scandal when he saw that all the officers were wearing blue uniforms. According to Hector Campbell, this was historically accurate for informal balls at the end of the 19th century, but the director roared that “We’re filming in color!”, and the actors changed into scarlet uniforms.
