What's left behind the scenes

  • The first sketches of the characters for "Peter Pan" appeared at the Disney studio in 1940. At that time, Disney studio artists often traced live actors as prototypes for their cartoon characters. The prototype for the little fairy Tinker Bell was a typical "calendar girl," Margaret Kerry, who also posed for one of the mermaids.
  • The film proved relatively successful, but Walt Disney (1901-1966) was still disappointed with it, believing that Peter Pan turned out cold and unappealing. Scholars of the work of Peter Pan's author, Scottish playwright J.M. Barrie (1860-1937), insisted that Disney had done a magnificent job, because Barrie himself originally depicted Pan as a heartless sociopath.
  • Initially, Barrie planned to write that Nana would go with the children to Neverland, and the end of the story would be much darker.
  • In search of the right sound for Tinkerbell, the filmmakers eventually realized that bells wouldn't work and used thin pieces of aluminum fastened together.
  • Based on the work by J.M. Barrie.
  • Following a long tradition in both film and theater, the roles of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling are played by the same actor. In this case, it is Jason Isaacs.
  • With the exception of the 1987 Soviet television version, this film was the first live-action movie in which the role of Peter Pan was played by a boy (Jeremy Sumpter).
  • The role of Peter Pan could have gone to Zac Efron, who had played it repeatedly in school productions before this.
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Dodi Fayed, who died in a car crash on August 31, 1997, along with Princess Diana. Dodi Fayed was one of the producers of Steven Spielberg's 'Hook' (1991) and had serious plans to stage a new live-action version of 'Peter Pan'. His father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, became the executive producer of the film.
  • During filming, Jeremy Sumpter grew more than eight inches. Because of this, the window of the children's room was rebuilt four times so that the actor wouldn't hit his head on it.
  • Both Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood were hospitalized at different times during filming due to injuries and exhaustion.
  • During the filming of the flying scene, Jason Isaacs fell out of the harness supporting him and hung in the air, held by his ankles, upside down and almost completely naked.
  • Three dogs were used as Nana during filming, and all three were male. In the film, Nana is a St. Bernard, not a Newfoundland, as she was in the book.
  • The book Aunt Millicent is reading is 'The War of the Worlds' by H.G. Wells.
  • The song sung by Mrs. Darling and the children is 'When I Was a Lad' from the popular comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan, dating back to 1878.
  • According to Carsen Gray (Tiger Lily), what she says to Captain Hook in the Iroquois language roughly translates to 'You are evil. You smell bad. You stink of bear urine. You are old and ugly.'
  • The final budget for the film was never announced, as the initially planned amount was exceeded several times, mainly due to the expensive sets.
  • When Captain Hook is dressing in his cabin, a tattoo of the Eton College cross can be seen on his left shoulder, which Jason Isaacs, himself an Eton alumnus, has.
  • An alternative ending was filmed, matching the ending of the book, in which Peter meets grown-up Wendy (played by Saffron Burrows) with her young daughter Jane. It was included in the DVD release of the film.
