What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Rosalind Wiseman's book "Queen Bees and Wannabes" (2002).
  • The initial version of the film received an "R" rating due to some rather risky and crude jokes. These were subsequently cut, and the film received a "PG-13" rating.
  • In the book, which served as the basis for the film, the most popular girl in school is known as the “Queen Bee.” In the film, this girl is named Regina, which translates to “Queen” from Latin.
  • Actress Amy Poehler, who plays Mrs. George, is only seven years older than her “on-screen daughter” Rachel McAdams (Regina George).
  • Amanda Seyfried, who plays Karen, also auditioned for the role of Regina and was even briefly cast in the role before producer Lorne Michaels decided that she would be better suited for the role of the “dumb blonde.”
  • Shortly before filming, Tim Meadows broke his arm and had to wear a cast, which resulted in the film crew having to make minor changes to the script.
  • There was only one candidate for the role of Gretchen, and Lacey Chabert was approved for the role after the very first audition.
  • Initially, actress Julia Kem was considered for the role of Janice Yen. However, after auditions, the role went to Lizzy Kaplan. Ultimately, Olympia Lukis played Jessica Lopez, a girl with a disability.
  • The initial cut of the film received an R rating for some rather risqué jokes. They were subsequently cut, and the film received a PG-13 rating.
