Short description
Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist, brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In 2009, Guillermo del Toro announced that work on the film was unlikely to begin in the next four years. However, he had already cast Doug Jones in the role of the creature and had begun conducting screen tests with him in makeup. Jones later stated that the project was shelved due to Universal Pictures' plans for a future "Dark Universe" franchise. The idea of a new cinematic universe was soon abandoned, and in 2023, del Toro revived the project under his contract with Netflix.
  • Initially, Andrew Garfield was cast as the Creature, but due to scheduling conflicts, he had to leave the project, and the role went to Jacob Elordi. Makeup artists worked on the Creature's appearance for Garfield for 9 months, and they had only 9 weeks to redo everything for Elordi.
  • Director and screenwriter Guillermo del Toro was inspired by the illustrations of American artist Bernie Wrightson. Even before filming began, the director stated that this would not be a faithful adaptation of the original text.
  • Director and screenwriter Guillermo del Toro wanted Victor Frankenstein to look not like a scientist, but like a rock star, so the actor playing the role, Oscar Isaac, based his image on performers such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Prince.
  • Jacob Elordi admitted that the role of the Creature was not easy for him. He spent up to ten hours in the makeup chair every day. If filming started in the morning, he would begin preparing for it the previous evening. Guillermo del Toro expressed admiration for the actor's patience, who never complained or disrupted filming, even if a shift lasted 20 hours.
  • In preparation for the role, Jacob Elordi studied butoh and Mongolian throat singing.
  • Director and screenwriter Guillermo del Toro immediately stated that he had no intention of working with digital technologies and artificial intelligence, as he prefers tangible results of human labor.
  • At one point, Guillermo del Toro considered filming a trilogy, with the script for each film focusing on different characters – Victor Frankenstein, the Creature, and Captain Robert Walton.
