What's left behind the scenes

  • When the character played by Treat Williams sings the third verse of the final musical number, the backing vocalists perform lines from William Shakespeare's (1554-1616) tragedies "Romeo and Juliet" (1595-1596) and "Hamlet" (1600-1601).
  • Director Miloš Forman (1932-2018) only regretted casting Nicholas Ray (1911-1979) as the General. He had to perform in clouds of smoke, he acted, and only then did Forman learn that Ray had lung cancer.
  • The film is based on a stage musical, but the film has its own plot, the songs are performed in a different order, and the characters are portrayed differently than in the theater.
  • Over 20,000 extras were used in the performance of the musical compositions “3-5-0-0” and “Let the Sun Shine In.” Filming took place at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
  • Madonna and Bruce Springsteen auditioned for roles in the film.
  • Miloš Forman cast Annie Golden as Jenny after seeing her perform with the punk rock band “The Shirts” at the famous “Bawery” nightclub.
  • In 1967, Miloš Forman attended the very first off-Broadway performance of “Hair” in New York. After the show, he approached the authors – James Rado (1932-2022), Gerome Ragni (1935-1991), and Galt MacDermot (1928-2018) – stating that he would like to create a cinematic adaptation and asking them to consider his proposal.
