What's left behind the scenes

  • Dustin Hoffman was very eager to play the role of Dewey Wilson, but the film's director, Michael Wadleigh, preferred to cast Albert Finney (1936-2019), his favorite actor, in the part.
  • This was the first film to depict a character's vision using thermography. This method of showing a character's vision (usually that of antagonists) was subsequently used repeatedly in various projects; among the most famous are the action films 'Predator' (1987) by John McTiernan and 'Predator 2' (1990) by Stephen Hopkins.
  • The director's cut of the film, which Michael Wadleigh submitted to the studio in February 1980 before being removed from the post-production process, was over 4.5 hours long.
  • According to director Michael Wadleigh, around ten police snipers were used for filming the scenes with the wolves. They were positioned around the set with orders to open fire if anything went wrong.
