What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming began on January 7, 2008. The film was shot in a record number of locations for the Bond series – in 6 countries: Panama, Italy, England, Austria, Chile, and Mexico.
  • The events of 'Quantum of Solace' take place just an hour after the ending of 'Casino Royale'.
  • The Russian title of the film ("Quantum of Mercy") does not entirely accurately reflect its original title, Quantum of Solace. A more accurate translation into Russian would be "Quantum of Consolation"...
  • On the evening of April 24th, stuntman Aris Comninos was driving an Aston Martin along a narrow, winding road around Lake Garda and collided with another vehicle. His passenger was also injured, but not seriously. The stuntman was taken to the hospital in the same helicopter the operator had been using. Neither director Marc Forster nor lead actor Daniel Craig were on set that evening.
  • 200,000 blank rounds were purchased for tests, training, and filming of the movie.
  • The opening scene of the film was shot over eight weeks in three different regions of Italy. Against the backdrop of Lake Garda in northern Italy, a car chase begins: an "Aston Martin" versus an "Alfa Romeo". The continuation of the chase was filmed in Carrara, in a quarry that is 2000 years old. Filming of the chase continued in the historic center of Siena. A year prior to this, footage of the famous Palio horse race was specifically filmed.
  • Gemma Arterton, who played Strawberry Fields, auditioned for the lead female role (Camille).
  • Daniel Craig and Mathieu Amalric had previously met on the set of "Munich" (2005).
  • To film the chase on the rooftops of Siena (Italy), tiles had to be removed from the houses and the roofs reinforced to prevent them from collapsing under the actors during filming.
  • Bodyflight, the UK's first aerodynamic tunnel, was useful to the special effects department for filming Bond and Camille's fall from the "Douglas" in Bolivia. The tunnel, built by the Ministry of Defense for aviation research, was closed in 1997 and reopened in 2005 as a parachuting center. The tunnel has a diameter of 4.95m, a length of almost 8m, and allows you to experience what it feels like to be in freefall at a speed of 273 km/h, without even having to jump out of a plane. Daniel Craig and Olga Kurylenko trained for several weeks under the guidance of stunt coordinator Gary Powell for just one day of filming in the aerodynamic tunnel.
  • Aerial filming took place in Mexico in the arid mountains of Baja California, at a small airport near the town of San Felipe. In this scene, Bond flies in a pre-war "Douglas" aircraft (model 1939), which is attacked by a "Markettti" sports plane equipped with machine guns, and an attack helicopter. For safety and environmental reasons, the shooting and smoke were added to the footage later using special effects.
  • The scene where M shows Bond the body of a dead girl lying on the bed is a clear reference to a scene from the film "Goldfinger" (1964). Only there, the girl was covered in gold, and here – in oil.
  • Olga Kurylenko's character is the first Bond girl in the history of the franchise who did not sleep with the super agent.
  • This is the first film in the franchise where the famous phrase "Bond, James Bond" is not uttered even once.
  • The film's climactic scenes were shot on Cerro Paranal, at an altitude of 2635 m in Chile, at a hotel near the "Very Large Telescope" observatory.
  • The Russian title of the film («Quantum of Mercy») does not quite accurately reflect its original title, Quantum of Solace. A more accurate translation into Russian is «Quantum of Consolation».
