- The idea of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger starring together in a film had been discussed for many years, dating back to the mid-1980s. Various script versions were written, but according to Schwarzenegger, their filming schedules never aligned. After Schwarzenegger became governor and then played a cameo role in "The Expendables" (2010), they revisited the idea of working together.
- During the scene in solitary confinement, Schwarzenegger's character turns to the Lord and looks at Caviezel, who played the main role in the film «The Passion of the Christ» (2004).
- In one scene, Stallone's character determines the location of the prison by referring to the direction of water swirling down the drain. The reverse swirling of water down the drain is a pseudoscientific myth based on the misapplication of the Coriolis effect to the movement of water in a vortex created when it drains from a sink or bathtub. The essence of the myth is that water supposedly swirls in different directions in the Southern and Northern hemispheres of the Earth, supposedly explained by the Earth's rotation and the action of the Coriolis force.
- During the escape from the first prison, Stallone's character learns the combination of the digital code for his cell. However, the suggested method (using fingerprints above the buttons) does not allow determining the order of the digits in the code combination. Thus, the fact that, knowing the constituent digits of the code, the main character guesses their order on the first try seems practically impossible.
