What's left behind the scenes

  • Director, screenwriter, and producer Zach Kregger tasked artist Thomas Hammock with building the sets for a small town. Hammock specifically studied satellite towns near Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Kregger and Hammock wanted everything to be like everywhere else, and for viewers to perceive the town as something completely ordinary and unremarkable.
  • While working on the film, Zach Kreger was inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson's drama "Magnolia".
  • Zach Kreger said that the scene with the running children was inspired by the famous 1972 photograph of a naked Vietnamese girl.
  • New Line Cinema acquired the script following a bidding war against Universal, Netflix, and Sony/TriStar. The deal included an eight-figure sum, production guarantees, Kreger's approval on editing, and a distribution guarantee.
  • On some days, there were over 170 children on the set.
  • Zach Kreger explained in one interview why he included words of gratitude to director David Fincher in the end credits. Throughout the film's production, Fincher was constantly nearby and available for consultation. Fincher always offered the most constructive and productive ideas, and his suggestions were especially valuable to the author during editing.
  • Alex (Carey Christopher) had to care for completely helpless parents. This was inspired by Zach Kreger's own childhood, who lived with an alcoholic father.
  • According to Zach Kreger, Amy Madigan (Gladys) could have chosen the past of her character – either a person who resorts to black magic to heal, or something else using makeup and a wig to resemble a human.
  • While working on the film, Zach Krigger was inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson’s drama "Magnolia".
  • According to Zach Krigger, Amy Madigan (Gladys) was able to choose her character’s backstory – whether she was someone who resorts to black magic to heal, or something else using makeup and a wig to appear human.
