Short description
When a pacifist is called to a political act that could change the course of history, how will a man of honor respond? This is the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a man who preached love while plotting the assassination of an evil tyrant. With world-shattering stakes, Bonhoeffer begs the question, how far will you go to stand up for what’s right?

What's left behind the scenes

  • The assassination attempt on the Führer depicted in the film actually occurred, although Adolf Hitler simply changed the schedule of his trips to the conquered countries rather than canceling them altogether. There is no evidence that Dietrich Bonhoeffer (played by Jonas Dassler) was involved in this conspiracy or any other, but he likely knew of its existence.
  • The film was initially intended to be titled "God's Spy."
  • According to the script, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (played by Jonas Dassler) is arrested at home, taken to a small rural house, and hanged. In reality, the SS arrested Bonhoeffer after a Sunday service and sent him to the Flossenbürg concentration camp, where he was hanged along with others, including Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the military intelligence and counterintelligence service, his deputy General Hans Oster, and others. The fate of his remains is unknown.
  • The film does not mention the protagonist's engagement to Maria von Wedemeyer or the correspondence he maintained with his family from prison through encrypted messages in books. He also corresponded with von Wedemeyer, and she was allowed to visit him (at least once a month). When Bonhoeffer's case was linked to the attempt on the Führer's life on July 20, 1944, he was transferred to a high-security prison, and contact with him was severed.
