Children of roughly the same age were used to portray young Alex and Margot in scenes from their childhood, implying that the characters were peers. In reality, however, actor François Cluzet is 15 years older than his colleague Marie-Josée Croze.
Initially, Harlan Coben, the screenwriter and author of the 2001 novel that served as the literary source for the film, believed the film would be shot in Hollywood and directed by Michael Apted (1941-2021). At one point, he received a call from director and screenwriter Guillaume Canet, who greatly enjoyed the source novel and shared his vision for adapting it to the screen. Coben was struck by Canet's passion and immediately understood that he grasped that the novel was primarily a love story and only secondarily a thriller. When things fell through with Hollywood and Apted, Coben called Canet and offered him the opportunity to direct the film.
Guillaume Canet and Jean Rochefort (1930-2017) themselves bear a considerable resemblance to their characters. Rochefort's character is a horse breeder, while his son, played by Canet, competes in show jumping. In reality, Canet was born into a family of horse breeders and represented France in this sport. As for Rochefort, he was involved in horse breeding since the 1960s, and during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, he served as a consultant for French television during equestrian competitions.
When Alexander gets out of the water at the beginning of the film to help Margot, he is hit twice with a bat. Closer to the end of the film, in a scene showing the same attack from a different angle, he is hit three times.
