What's left behind the scenes

  • In one scene, Julie carries a box with the word "blanco" (Spanish for "white") written on it. In the next shot, the heroine is shown from behind, with a man in blue walking past her on the right and a woman in red on the left. This is a reference to the structure of the "Three Colors" trilogy – blue, white, red – as the colors of the French flag. These same colors are also played with in another episode, where children in red and white swim trunks jump into a pool with blue water.
  • When Patrice's photos are shown on television, one of them shows him with the famous Bulgarian-born pianist Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012).
  • In one scene, a sugar cube dissolving in a cup of coffee is shown in close-up. Since the director wanted the sugar to dissolve in the coffee in exactly 5 seconds, Krzysztof Kieślowski made his assistants experiment with different varieties of coffee to determine the sugar’s dissolution time in each and find the one he needed. It turned out that it takes sugar from 3 to 11 seconds to dissolve in different types of coffee.
  • In the scene where Juliette Binoche’s character scrapes her hand against the wall, a prosthetic was initially considered to protect the actress’s hand, but the artificial hand was too noticeable. Binoche chose to forgo it and scratched her hand until it bled.
