• Matt Dillon's character's acceptance speech is based on the speech given by Tom Hanks at the 66th Academy Awards when he received the statuette for his role in 'Philadelphia' (Jonathan Demme, 1993) and thanked his gay teacher.
• All the school scenes were filmed at a high school in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. Unfortunately, the school's name is not mentioned in the credits because the educational district authorities simply forgot to sign the corresponding permission form by pure chance. The building has remained practically the same as it was during filming (although it has been repainted).
• Tom Selleck shaved off his famous mustache for filming in this movie.
