What's left behind the scenes
- Meg Ryan was initially cast in the role of Shelby, but the producers understood her situation and allowed the actress to break her contract in order to star in Rob Reiner's comedy "When Harry Met Sally" (1989).
- The film was shot in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
- The Mallin house was filmed at two different locations.
- Director Herbert Ross wanted to authentically convey the hospital atmosphere, so for the scenes with Julia Roberts' character in the hospital, he found and hired the very doctors and nurses who had actually cared for Susan Harling, who served as the prototype for Shelby.
