- The film is based on the short story of the same name by Luciano Vincenzoni.
- The director's cut of the film has a runtime of 108 minutes.
- The version for the United States was heavily cut. Primarily, the cut scenes depicted the teenage protagonist's dreams in which he had sex with Malena. Only the scene where the boy visits a brothel and lies down in bed with a prostitute who resembles Malena was left of the erotic scenes.
- Filming took place in Sicily and Morocco from September 27, 1999, to March 15, 2000.
