What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Pierre La Mure (1950), dedicated to the biography of the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
  • Filming took place in Shepperton (Surrey, United Kingdom) as well as in London and Paris.
  • José Ferrer (1912-1992) became Henri Toulouse-Lautrec through the use of camera angles, makeup, costumes, hidden pits and platforms, and short doubles. Ferrer also used special knee pads (which he designed himself) that allowed him to move on his knees, with his legs strapped below the knees to his body. This was very painful, and he could only endure it for short periods. The cane he used in many scenes was a vital necessity for him.
  • Director John Huston (1906-1987) finished the final edit of the film just hours before its premiere, after which it was nominated for an Academy Award.
  • The artist Marcel Vertes (1895-1961), whose hand is depicted drawing works by Lautrec, partially funded his art school education by forging and selling Lautrec's drawings.
