What's left behind the scenes
- Filming of the picture began on July 22, 2002, in New York with a budget of $12 million (reduced from $30 million). Filming was originally scheduled to begin at the end of 2000 (when Nicole Kidman was to play the lead role), then moved to the end of 2001, and finally to July 2002. Filming wrapped up at the end of September 2002.
- Initially, the film was to be shot by Miramax Films with the support of Universal Pictures, but they later withdrew due to disagreements with Jane Campion.
