In 1965, a young woman with dreams of becoming a writer has a son at the age of 15 and struggles to make things work with the drug-addicted father.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Beverly D'Onofrio has a scientific degree, while Drew Barrymore, who portrays her in the film, was expelled from school for poor academic performance.
  • The prototypes for the main characters, Beverly and Jason D'Onofrio, depict guests at a wedding scene. They are seated behind Drew Barrymore.
  • When James L. Brooks (who served as the film's producer) acquired the rights to adapt Beverly D'Onofrio's book in 1989, Debra Winger and Cher were considered for the lead role.
  • The wedding scene took two days to film, during which Brittany Murphy had to cry constantly. Notably, the first take was used in the final cut.
  • Adam Garcia played the son of Drew Barrymore's character, despite being two years older than his film partner.
