Short description
Allie Fox, an American inventor exhausted by the perceived danger and degradation of modern society, decides to escape with his wife and children to Belize. In the jungle, he tries with mad determination to create a utopian community with disastrous results.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the construction of the film's sets in Belize, the crew discovered an ancient Mayan temple. The Belizean government was informed, and the area was declared a historical monument.
- Jack Nicholson could have gotten the lead role.
- During casting, River Phoenix was repeatedly rejected for the role of Charlie Fox due to his age (the actor was 15 at the time). When an actor of the appropriate age could not be found, the tape of his audition was resubmitted to the director. Impressed by what he saw, Peter Weir decided that age wasn't such an important factor after all and gave River Phoenix the desired role.
