Short description

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Petronius.
  • The full version of the film has a runtime of 138 minutes.
  • At the same time as Fellini, Alfredo Bini, primarily known for being Pier Paolo Pasolini's steadfast producer until the late 1960s, began work on his own version of 'Satyricon'. Alberto Grimaldi filed a lawsuit demanding that Bini halt production, but Bini proved that he had been planning a film adaptation of Petronius' novel since 1962, and had registered the title 'Satyricon' at that time. As a result, Grimaldi and Fellini not only failed to prevent the creation of a competing film, but also had to find a new title for their own. After considering many options, they decided to simply include Fellini's name in the title.
  • United Artists, the film company for which Fellini was shooting his version of 'Satyricon', bought the international distribution rights to Bini/Polidoro's film and released it three years later, after changing its title to 'The Degenerates'.
