What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in Spain (the provinces of Almería, Segovia, and Navarre), Italy, Morocco (Casablanca and Volubilis), Algeria (Timgad), Greece (including Crete), and England (Knutsford). General Patton's opening speech was recorded in Los Angeles.
  • George C. Scott refused to accept the Academy Award for his role as General Patton, as he did not believe he was competing with other actors. The film's producer, Frank McCarthy, accepted the award on Scott's behalf during the ceremony, but, in accordance with the actor's wishes, returned the statuette to the Academy the next day. Francis Ford Coppola (Edmund H. North accepted the screenplay award alone) and director Franklin J. Schaffner (Carl Molden accepted the award on his behalf) were also absent from the ceremony.
  • In 2003, the film was added to the National Film Registry.
  • The film is based on Ladislas Farago's "Patton: Ordeal and Triumph" and General Omar Bradley's "A Soldier's Story." General Bradley also served as a military consultant during the filming.
