What's left behind the scenes

  • The main theme for the film was performed by Enya.
  • The film was shot on a 65mm Panavision Super 70 camera, using the latest equipment from Panavision. The format in which the film was shot was widely advertised even in the accompanying materials to the film, but did not contribute to a revival of interest in shooting films on 65mm cameras.
  • Director Ron Howard did not like Nicole Kidman’s performance in the scene where her character lifts the basin covering Tom Cruise’s groin (they were married at the time). Without saying anything to the actress, he told Cruise to take off his underwear, and then the scene was reshot. The reshoot of this scene was included in the final film.
  • The race scene to claim land plots involved 800 extras, 400 horses, and 200 wagons.
  • Three of Ron Howard’s ancestors actually participated in the 1893 land rush race, as depicted in the film.
  • The actors had to learn to speak with an Irish accent. It should be noted that Nicole Kidman has an incorrect pronunciation. As the daughter of a wealthy Irish landowner, she should have spoken with an English accent, but this would have confused foreign audiences, and the actress was taught to speak with a Dublin accent. In Ireland, this film is considered a classic of the comedy genre due to the terrible, supposedly Irish pronunciation of the actors.
  • In the window of a clothing store in Boston, Kidman's character looks at a dress worn by Mary Steenbergen's character in Robert Zemeckis's sci-fi comedy "Back to the Future Part III" (1990).
  • At the end of the credits, the filmmakers express their gratitude to a dolphin. This was not an animal trained in captivity. This bottlenose dolphin lived in the waters of the Atlantic near Ireland, since at least 1983. He often played with swimmers and people on boats and even became a local celebrity.
  • The scenes in the ring were filmed at a partially converted railway station in Billings, Montana.
  • To build the set for the brothel in central Dublin, 'Temple Bar' was closed for three months. Local shops and firms with offices located there were paid a substantial penalty for being closed during filming. Despite all these difficulties and inconveniences, the street where all this took place was only shown briefly in the film.
  • Filming took place from May 28 to September 26, 1991.
