What's left behind the scenes

  • Tuesday Weld was originally considered for the role of Lady Macbeth, but she declined due to a planned nude scene.
  • The film was shot in Wales during a period of fog.
  • Work on the film began with four weeks of extremely difficult shooting in a national park in Wales. On the very first day, a strong gust of wind blew the cameraman into a crevice, and he nearly died.
  • The scene with Macbeth's henchmen and Macduff's household is based on director Roman Polanski's childhood memories of when SS officers once came to search his parents' home.
  • Filming the scene with the bear turned out to be incredibly difficult. The first bear they tried to film was too timid and constantly tried to run away from the dogs, while the second, on the contrary, was overly aggressive and even injured one of the crew members. Ultimately, Roman Polanski decided to use a stuntman in a bear suit, but even the stuntman – fearing that the protective padding wouldn't be enough – agreed to perform only if no more than one dog was set on him. The director secretly ordered the trainers to release three dogs, and the stuntman in the bear suit, naturally, got scared and started shouting for the dogs to be pulled off him.
