- John Landis specifically flew to Colorado, where Jack Nicholson lived, and drove through a snowstorm to hear from the actor himself that he was not interested in the role of Ed.
- John Landis wanted Gene Hackman to play the role of Ed, which Jack Nicholson turned down and which Jeff Goldblum eventually took on. Hackman also didn't object, but Universal Pictures decided not to cast Hackman in the film because a couple of his previous films had failed at the box office.
