Short description
Irish Republican Army member Fergus forms an unexpected bond with Jody, a kidnapped British soldier in his custody, despite the warnings of fellow IRA members Jude and Maguire. Jody makes Fergus promise he'll visit his girlfriend, Dil, in London, and when Fergus flees to the city, he seeks her out. Hounded by his former IRA colleagues, he finds himself increasingly drawn to the enigmatic, and surprising, Dil.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jay Davidson, who played the role of the transgender Dil, was found in a bar.
  • The screenwriter and director Neil Jordan initially intended to title the film “The Soldier’s Wife,” however Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999), with whom he had a friendly relationship, recommended he change the title because he firmly believed that films with religious or military titles deterred audiences and usually became box office failures (as happened with Jordan’s own films “Miracle” in 1991 and “We’re No Angels” in 1989). Jordan then borrowed the title from one of the British popular songs of the 1960s.
