What's left behind the scenes

  • Both episodes (the visit to the fort with Jean-Jean and the final fight) were filmed at Fort Boyard, which was in a state of extreme disrepair at the time (which is clearly visible in the film). Boyard occupies a total of 15 minutes of screen time. It took three weeks to film them, which were never fully completed, being interrupted by a severe storm. During which the film crew had to be urgently evacuated by helicopter.
  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by José Giovanni. The author himself also filmed his own cinematic adaptation of the novel in the same year, released under the title "The Law of the Survivor".
  • The characters Roland Darban and Manou Borelli were borrowed by the author, José Giovanni, from his first novel "The Hole" (1957–1958). In the film adaptation of this novel (directed by Jacques Becker, 1960), the role of Roland Darban was played by non-professional actor Jacques Kerrod, and the role of Manou Borelli was played by Philippe Leroi. The characters bear a very distant external resemblance to their prototypes and have a completely different fate.
