Short description
On a bet, a gridiron hero at John Hughes High School sets out to turn a bespectacled plain Jane into a beautiful and popular prom queen in this outrageous send-up of the teen movies of the 1980s and '90s.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The filmmakers were unable to obtain permission to use footage from Robert Iskov's comedy "It's All Her" (1998), so the corresponding scene had to be shot with two different people in library sets and blurred.
  • The studio executives disliked the film's ending, and the filmmakers had to turn to Molly Ringwald for help (she played the flight attendant).
  • In Spain and Greece, the film was released under the title "Not Another Dumb American Movie."
  • The buildings are named after directors and actors of films that the film itself parodies – John Hughes, Anthony Michael Hall, and Harry Dean Stanton.
  • The original title of the film was "Children's Cinema," but it had to be abandoned because the issues it addressed were definitely not suitable for a children's audience, and the film was given the title "Not-for-Children Cinema."
  • The detention scene is a parody of John Hughes's comedy "The Breakfast Club" (1985). Paul Gleason plays the principal, parodying himself from the Hughes film, and even his characters have the same name in both films – Richard Vernon.
  • Reggie Ray, played by Ron Lester, is a parody of Billy Bob in his own role in Brian Robbins's sports melodrama "Varsity Blues" (1998). In both films, his characters have a pet pig named Bacon in "Varsity Blues" and Sausage in "Not Another Teen Movie."
  • Among the extras in the crowd at the graduation, one can spot someone who looks exactly like Marty, the main character from the "Back to the Future" films, played by Michael J. Fox.
  • On some DVD/Blu-Ray editions (but not all), there are two bonus scenes at the end.
