Mira Sorvino tried to get a role in this film while in New York, but was turned down. When the screenwriter and director (who also played the lead role) Woody Allen went to London to look at British actresses, Sorvino showed up there in full costume for the character, and this time she got the role.
In reality, Mira Sorvino graduated from Harvard with honors. She speaks French and Chinese quite well.
Allen found it very difficult to direct Helen Bonham Carter, and many scenes with her were cut during editing.
