Short description
In 1949, composer Roman Strauss is executed for the murder of his wife. In 1990s Los Angeles, a detective comes across a mute amnesiac woman who is somehow linked to the Strauss murder.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Hanne Sigulle was cast as the mother of Derek Jacobi's character, even though she was actually five years younger than him in real life.
  • The scene of the night walk in Los Angeles' Echo Park was filmed three months after principal photography had wrapped.
  • Two roles were given not only to the main characters (Mike/Roman, Grace/Margaret), but also to the actress who initially played a nun in the orphanage and then a bored police officer.
  • Prison number 25101415 refers to October 25, 1415. On that day, the Battle of Agincourt took place, won by King Henry V, the character portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in his previous film Henry V (1989). The director's birthday, December 10th, can be seen in one of the newspaper articles in the opening credits.
  • The cover of LIFE magazine in Mr. Maddson's store depicts Laurence Olivier as Hamlet from the 1948 film of the same name. Another reference to William Shakespeare is the bridge where Mike and Doug fight, which is called 'Shakespeare Bridge.' This is the actual name of the bridge in Los Angeles where the film was shot.
  • Robin Williams refused to have his name in the opening credits so that the audience wouldn't think they were watching a comedy.
  • The monastery building was also used as Bruce Wayne's mansion in the "Batman" television series (1966).
  • Donald Sutherland was originally considered for the role of Franklin Madson.
