This is the last joint work of Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski. After filming, Kinski said that he had “burned out completely,” giving his all to this film. Kinski quarreled so much with the director that he decided to make films with his participation independently in the future.
His Royal Highness Nana Agyere Kwame II and the tribe under his jurisdiction personally starred in the film as the African king.
The image of Da Silva – the character played by Klaus Kinski – was inspired by the real slave trader Francisco Félix de Sousa, who played a significant role in the history of Dahomey.
