Short description
Andie is an outcast, hanging out either with her older boss, who owns the record store where she works, or her quirky high school classmate Duckie, who has a crush on her. When one of the rich and popular kids at school, Blane, asks Andie out, it seems too good to be true. As Andie starts falling for Blane, she begins to realize that dating someone from a different social sphere is not easy.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot at the same high school as the musical 'Grease' (1978).
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of actress Alexa Kenin, who played Jenna, and artist Bruce Waintraub. Alexa was murdered in New York several months after the film's release. Waintraub passed away around the same time.
  • Anthony Michael Hall, who had previously appeared in three Hughes films, turned down the role of Ducky, stating that he found the character to be a complete idiot.
  • Originally, John Hughes envisioned a film where the protagonist was a young man, not a young woman.
  • The title “Pretty in Pink” came from the song of the same name by the Psychedelic Furs.
  • After the film’s release, a novel by H.B. Gilmour appeared, based on John Hughes’ screenplay.
  • Originally, in the finale, Andy was supposed to end up with Duckie. However, test screenings showed that audiences wanted to see Andy with Blaine. Hughes made changes for two reasons: 1) he didn't know how the public would react to the idea that the poor and the rich could never be together; 2) by the end of filming, Ringwald looked so exhausted that it was noticeable in the film.
