What's left behind the scenes

  • Bill Murray actually bowled three strikes in a row in the scene where his character manages to do so. The reaction of the audience – and the actor himself – to this achievement was far from staged. As for Woody Harrelson, directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly claim that he was more than mediocre at bowling.
  • As was practically always the case, Bill Murray improvised almost every line he delivered. He would read the script, understand the gist, and come up with something of his own. The film's directors, Bobby and Peter Farrelly, didn't object, believing that Murray made it funnier.
  • According to the Farrelly brothers, they initially didn't have a high opinion of Lin Shaye, who had already been cast in a small role in the 1994 comedy 'Dumb and Dumber' at the insistence of her brother and New Line Cinema employee Robert Shaye. When she came to the audition, she was initially mistaken for a homeless person and they tried to get rid of her until they realized who she was. The Farrellys were so impressed by this that she has regularly appeared in their films ever since.
  • The Farrelly brothers invited Michael Richards (who played Kramer in the series 'Seinfeld,' 1989-1998) to discuss a role they wanted to offer him in the film, but the conversation didn't go well. At one point, Richards apologized and asked permission to use the restroom in their office. They, of course, didn't object, but when he didn't return from the restroom after half an hour, they decided to break down the locked door. It was then they discovered that Richards had long since left through the window and walked away.
  • During the final match in Reno, the people in the back rows aren't extras, but cardboard cutouts.
  • In the restaurant scene, before Randy Quaid's character is beaten up, three of them are eating burgers and fries, while Roy is eating a salad, because Woody Harrelson, who plays the role, is a vegetarian.
