Short description
Because of the actions of her irresponsible parents, a young girl is left alone on a decrepit country estate and survives inside her fantastic imagination.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Mitch Cullin's novel "Tideland" (2000).
  • Filming of "Tideland" began on September 27, 2004, in Saskatchewan (Canada) and continued until December 1, during a creative break Terry Gilliam took while working on "The Brothers Grimm".
  • Brendan Fletcher was cast in the role of Dickens before Terry Gilliam had even met him. Gilliam made the decision after viewing a demo tape sent to him by Fletcher.
  • Jeliza-Rose reads excerpts from Lewis Carroll’s 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' to her father.
  • Reminiscences of Alice run throughout the film: the bus ride, falling down the rabbit hole, the rabbit, Dell – the Duchess (but in the picnic scene in the book, she behaves like the White Queen from Through the Looking-Glass), and so on.
  • Mitch Kalin, the author of the novel 'Tideland,' can be seen in the film as one of the bus passengers.
  • For the American theatrical release, Gilliam recorded a short video message to the audience, which is played before every screening of the film. It contains the following words: “Hello, my name is Terry Gilliam. Many of you are not going to like this film. Many of you luckily are going to love it. And then the great majority of you are not going to know what you think of it. And I basically say, put away all the things you know, all the things you've learned, all your prejudices and fears, the preconceptions that an adult has, and try to be an innocent, as difficult as that is.”
