In early script versions, the character played by Ashley Judd was not a woman, but a man – a professor of law at Harvard.
James Caviezel categorically refused to participate in an explicit scene with Ashley Judd, stating that he loved and respected his wife too much, and that filming such a scene would contradict his beliefs as a devout Catholic. Ultimately, Caviezel and Judd were shown fully clothed in the scene.
According to the film's director, Carl Franklin, during post-production he wanted to reshoot a panorama of the Golden Gate Bridge, but his plans were thwarted by the September 11, 2001 attacks.
