Short description
A sweet-natured Temp Agency operator and amateur Presidential look-alike is recruited by the Secret Service to become a temporary stand-in for the President of the United States.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Many Hollywood celebrities, politicians, congressmen, and leading political commentators appear in the film as themselves.
  • Kevin Kline landed the lead role in the film after Warren Beatty and Kevin Costner turned down the offer.
  • The film's plot is largely fictional, however, there was a case in US history where, as a result of a stroke, President Woodrow Wilson lost his capacity, and his administration urgently organized a cover-up operation and allowed a person who had not been elected and was not even a politician to run the country. In the autumn of 1919, approximately two years into his second term (1916-1924), the President suffered a stroke and was left half-paralyzed, partially blind, and mentally impaired (to what extent – remained a closely guarded secret even a century later). Instead of allowing Wilson to simply resign and hand over power to US Vice President Thomas R. Marshall (1854-1925), the seriousness of what had happened and Wilson’s condition were decided to be kept secret, and the President’s second wife, Edith Wilson (1872-1961), began to run the executive branch of government.
  • According to screenwriter Gary Ross, he didn't like the ending of an early draft of the screenplay he had written. Ross was under pressure to deliver the script, and his financial situation was dire, but he sat down and reworked it, and managed to resolve his financial issues with the bank.
