Short description
In this modern take on Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac," C. D. Bales is the witty, intelligent, and brave fire chief of a small Pacific Northwest town who, due to the size of his enormous nose, declines to pursue the girl of his dreams, lovely Roxanne Kowalski. Instead, when his shy underling Chris McConnell becomes smitten with Roxanne, C.D. feeds the handsome young man the words of love to win her heart.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's main character, S.D. Bales (Steve Martin), shares the same initials as Cyrano de Bergerac, the hero of Edmond Rostand's play on which the film is based.
  • When Steve Martin, as C.D., talks to a plastic surgeon about an operation, he holds a picture of the nose he wants near his face. The picture depicts the actor's own nose.
  • When Steve Martin walked around with a prosthetic nose during filming, he often heard people say “Nice nose!” with varying degrees of sarcasm. Once, while filming in a bar, he needed to go to the restroom between takes, and a group of bikers was located between him and the restroom. He was already preparing to hear the usual comment about his nose as he passed them, when one of the bikers asked: “What are you so sad about?”
  • The nose for Steve Martin was created by the famous makeup artist Michael Westmore.
