Writer Lewis Abernathy decided to sell the film script to CAROLCO Studios at the same time his friend, director James Cameron, was working on "The Abyss". Cameron asked Abernathy to postpone the start of the "Deepstar Six" project to avoid competition with "The Abyss", but Abernathy refused. The relationship between Abernathy and Cameron was damaged for a long time. Their friendship was rekindled only in 1995 during the filming of "Titanic".
