What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Whitley Strieber.
  • Alan Parker was originally supposed to direct the film. However, after watching Tony Scott's commercials, he said that Scott should direct the movie instead.
  • David Bowie said that in order to make his voice hoarse and match the image of a monstrously rapidly aging man, he would go out onto the George Washington Bridge every night and shout all the punk songs he could remember.
  • The film featured the song "Bela Lugosi is Dead" by Bauhaus, which can be considered a milestone in the emergence of gothic subculture.
  • For filming, David Bowie (1947-2016) learned to play the cello.
  • Once during filming, costume designer Milena Kanonero (who was known for her fanatical dedication to her work) went missing and no one could find her. Eventually, it turned out that, unable to find suitable material for a handkerchief for David Bowie's character in London, she flew to Rome at her own expense in search of the material she needed.
  • Director Tony Scott (1944-2012) would have liked to film everything in New York, but due to a lack of budget, he was forced to film a significant portion of the material in London.
  • Preparing for the role of a violinist, Beth Elers spent six weeks learning the basics of playing the violin.
  • The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup. It did not receive the award due to a lack of other contenders. A proposal to award it a specially created prize was also rejected.
  • The film flopped at the box office, and disheartened by this, Tony Scott left filmmaking and returned to directing commercials. In 1985, Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson approached him with a trial screenplay based on an article from a California magazine. The article was titled "Top Gun," and was written by Ehud Yonay (1940-2012). Simpson suggested that Scott film based on this script. He reluctantly agreed and filmed "Top Gun" (1986) the following year. Scott was greatly surprised that the film became incredibly popular.
