Short description
When members of the nefarious crime syndicate KAOS attack the U.S. spy agency Control and the identities of secret agents are compromised, the Chief has to promote hapless but eager analyst Maxwell Smart to field agent. He is partnered with veteran and capable Agent 99, the only spy whose cover remains intact. Can they work together to thwart the evil world-domination plans of KAOS and its crafty operative?

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jennifer Love Hewitt and Rachel McAdams were considered for the role of Agent 99.
  • When the project was being developed in 1998, Jim Carrey was considered for the lead role.
  • Some scenes were filmed on the grounds of McGill University in Montreal. Other scenes were filmed in Moscow, Washington, and Los Angeles.
  • The red "Ferrari" in the film has the license plate N654GT, but Russian license plates cannot contain letters of the English alphabet.
  • The five-minute skydiving scene, where Maxwell Smart falls out of the plane but is rescued by Agent 99, was filmed for real. Under the guidance of renowned photographer Norman Kent, a team of professional skydivers shot the entire scene over 70 parachute jumps over 4 weeks, exclusively at sunset or dawn.
  • Anne Hathaway sustained a shin injury during filming, and the wound had to be stitched.
  • Initially, a sequel was planned, but Steve Carell read the script and declined to participate in the filming. He subsequently wrote a sequel script himself, and the film’s director, Peter Segal, even liked the script, however, after this film Anne Hathaway became a star, and Alan Horn, who had been promoting the film, left for another job at ‘Disney,’ so even Carell realized that a sequel wouldn't happen. In 2019, he confirmed in an interview that the moment for a sequel had passed.
  • During the skydiving scene, Steve Carell’s stunt double wore a special device under his suit, so at a certain altitude, the jacket would open at the back and deploy a parachute.
