Short description
Early in the 20th century, middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman and his young wife, Anne, have still not consummated their marriage, while Fredrik's son finds himself increasingly attracted to his new stepmother. To make matters worse, Fredrik's old flame Desiree makes a public bet that she can seduce him at a romantic weekend retreat where four couples convene, swapping partners and pairing off in unexpected ways.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A musical, "A Little Night Music," was created based on the film.
  • This light film (light in comparison to other works by the director) was shot by Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) during a period of financial hardship, when he periodically experienced stomach pains (at that time he weighed only 57 kg) and was having an affair with Harriet Andersson. Bergman later recounted that if he hadn't started filming at that moment, he probably would have committed suicide.
  • To make matters worse, the Svensk Filmindustri film company informed Bergman that they would not finance his next film if this one failed at the box office.
  • According to Bergman, Svensk Filmindustri submitted the film for screening at the Cannes Film Festival without informing him. He read about it in the newspaper. He saw the headline “Swedish Success in Cannes,” and soon realized that the article was about him and his film.
  • The film was shot in 55 days during a period of intense heat.
  • During the making of the film, some of its details reflected events in Bergman's personal life. His relationship with Harriet Andersson was coming to an end, and Bergman had secretly begun seeing Bibi Andersson (1935-2019). He even gave her a small role and filmed another scene with both Anderssons.
  • A musical, “A Little Night Music,” was created based on the film.
